Vivo officially announced the latest versions of its smartphones Vivo X7 and X7 Plus

Without global expansion ambitions, BBK sub-brand Vivo seems perfectly comfortable taking a few all the design cues from the Western smartphone industry’s leaders in its attempt to pose a stronger and stronger domestic challenge to the likes of Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO.

The just-unveiled X7 and X7 Plus are proud upper mid-range metal-and-glass affairs, with familiar antenna lines and rose gold color options, priced on Chinese shores starting at a relatively affordable 2,500 Yuan, or $375.

There’s not much difference between the two, save for a screen size gap of half an inch and 1,000 mAh extra battery capacity on the Plus version. Also, the Vivo X7 Plus features sharp 16MP cameras on both its front and rear, while the non-Plus offers 16-megapixel prowess for selfies, and only a 13MP “main” shooter.

Clearly targeted at fashion and image-obsessed youngsters, the phones pack Qualcomm’s best non-flagship processor too (the Snapdragon 652), 4GB RAM (each), and can accommodate up to 128GB storage internally.

The 5.2-inch Vivo X7 measures a skimpy 7.2mm in depth and somehow hauls a generous 3,000 mAh cell, with the 5.7-inch (super-) model just a hair thicker and powered by a whopping 4,000 mAh fast-charging battery. Why oh why does Android 5.1 Lollipop have to ruin everything?
